Łódzkie Akademickie Centrum Sportowo-Dydaktyczne is located on the Campus of the Technical University of Łódź. The hall is a classic multi-purpose hall for the entire municipality and primarily satisfies the need for sport activities (through university, municipal schools and sport clubs), for fitness and activity groups, and for various cultural events.
Total usable space is approx. 28,000m2 and includes e.g. the only 50m-swimming pool (A=1282m2) in this region, 30m-swimming pool (A=750m2) for P.E. classes and a variety of competitions: high diving, synchronized swimming and waterball.
Scope of presented model was to deliver a detailed steel design of the roof structure and was performed by JAKOSTA for Zeman HDF.
Special challenges
The main challenge was the 3D-truss girders' geometry: upper chords - despite being an arc with circular hollow sections - were at a different span than bottom chords (6.5m and 2m respectively) which were additionally precambered to maintain designed deflections. All of this resulted in having every single diagonal in a different plane - which is why gusset plates had to be "broken".
What made the project successful
In order to ensure that the structure will be feasible for the manufacturer and executed as designed, additional helper objects were added into model as a reference.
Each the part of the truss girder was pre-assembled in a workshop for testing. With a project of scale, software precision regarding the way the arcs are represented was important - even small deviations would make the structure very difficult to erect.
Numerous techniques were used to ultimately solve all those issues. Without BIM technology, this project would have been impossible to finish in a given - very short - time.
