Nam Ngiep 1 is a 290-megawatt hydropower project under construction in Bolikhamxay and Xaysomboun provinces of the Lao PDR. The project is being built and will be operated by the Nam Ngiep 1 Power Company, whose goal is to build a socially and environmentally responsible power project that will provide clean renewable electricity and contribute to poverty reduction in Laos.
Two dams and power stations are under construction along the Ngiep River in Bolikhamxay. The main 148-metre-high dam will create a water storage reservoir covering a 67-km2 area extending into Xaysomboun province. At the main dam site, a primary power station will generate around 272 MW of electricity for export to Thailand and will release water into a regulating pond where a second dam and power station will generate around 19 MW of electricity for local use. The re-regulating dam will ensure the smooth release of water to minimize the disruption of water levels in the river downstream.
The preparatory works for road, river diversion, excavation for the dam foundation and temporary facilities for the dam will be carried out between 2013 and 2015, with concrete placement of the main dam set to start in 2016 and power generation expected to begin in January 2019. All main permanent works of Nam Ngiep 1 Hydropower Project have been executed by Song Da 5, such as Main Dam excavation, RCC production, RCC placement and civil works of re-regulation dam. The project will also include concrete gravity dams on the Nam Ngiep River, a tributary of the Mekong. Its main dam will measure 148m in height, 530m in length at the top, and the volume of the RCC dam body is approximately two million m3 with a maximum construction rate of 5400 m3 per month. The Dam was executed in May 2016 and will be completed in May 2018.
