The Oaks is a student accommodation block for almost 400 students being built on a derelict office site in Coventry.
Manufacture and erection of the block is currently taking place (handover due May 2020). TDS were enlisted to provide all the modelling and fabrication details for both the hot rolled steel podium structure and staircases along with all the cold rolled steel frame structure. We also modelled in all edge protection to provide safety during and after steelwork erection for all trades.
What were the challenges and what made the project successful.
TDS started the project with new developed macros designed to speed up the design process and created a bespoke model suitable for offsite fabrications. TDS created check lists to ensure each element was covered due to the complexity.
What benefits utilizing BIM and Tekla Software brought to the project.
Using a cloud based version of Tekla 2018 we had a dedicated five man team work on the job creating almost 20,000 drawings to deliver the project on time to an extremely tight schedule.
The project in numbers.
20,000 drawings. 634 sq m (6,800 sq ft) of amenity areas comprising of an open plan common room and games room, gym and virtual training areas, study areas and social space.
