DUBAI EXPO U.A.E. PAVILION
Introducing the UAE's rich culture and bright future
Shaped like a falcon in flight, the pavilion tells the story of the UAE as a global hub, and the vision of its leaders to create a peaceful and progressive society with ambitious plans for the future.
The National Media Council selected architect Santiago Calatrava’s design for the UAE Pavilion for Dubai World Expo.
Located facing the Al Wasl Plaza, which lies at the center of the 200-hectare exhibition zone, the UAE Pavilion – whose design is inspired by a 'falcon in flight' – will represent the UAE to participants and partners from more than 173 countries, with a number of delegates who will be participating virtually as well for the event, which will be held from October 2021 to March 2022.
The key feature of the scheme is a series of huge metal-clad roof forms which open on a single pivot to provide a direct connection with the outside natural air. The structure, which will be located opposite Al Wasl Plaza in the center of the 4.38 square kilometer exhibition area, will boast retractable fins over the roof, that represent the falcon wings, that will be able to move hydraulically to allow increased daylight exposure and will have solar cells integrated into the design of the wings itself.
Designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava and inspired by a falcon in flight, the UAE pavilion will be one of the most important landmarks at the Expo Dubai. The Pavilion is set on an area of 15,000 square meters, with a built-up area of 19,200 square meters, and is comprised of a 2,000 square meter upper floor and a 662 square meter mezzanine, with a plaza level and related facilities spread across 3,000 square meters. The ground level includes a garden and car park spread across 13,300 square meters.
The construction of the pavilion is designed to meet the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum Rating.
Tekla and the UAE Pavillion
The U.A.E. Pavillion is not the only iconic project of the EXPO where Tekla and other Trimble technology were utilized. Even for this ingenious project, Gulf Steel Industries FZE, who are responsible for the project's steel structures utilized Tekla Structures as well as Tekla BIM Sight for the successful delivery of this project.
The overall steel was expected to be over 2500 tons and the scope of work was compression ring, Main Rib, Tension Ring, Secondary Beams, Actuator Frames & Wing Bearing, as well as Cantilever Wings.
