ASSENT Steel constructing the largest library in the Arab world Mohammed Bin Rashid library
Mohammed Bin Rashid Library
is the largest library in the Arab world characterized by a unique design resembling an open book facing the sky holds more than 4.5 million books. The main contractor behind the library is Dubai-based ASGC, who was responsible for the structure’s civil, MEP, and associated infrastructure works utilizing Trimble's BIM solutions.
Besides being an environmentally friendly library, it also incorporates the highest sustainability standards, with 10% of its energy coming from solar panels installed on the roof. This structure helps insulate the building's interior, reduce heat gain, and regulate the building's internal environment.
With its strategic location in the center of Dubai city, the library benefits from natural lighting and it’s designed to reduce water consumption by 50%, and water from air conditioners is recycled to irrigate gardens.
Maximize the benefits of early procurement
ASSENT STEEL INDUSTRIES L.L.C is a member of the ASGC Group based in Dubai, UAE. It is the leading provider of steel fabrication and engineering services and well-known for providing high-quality steel structures using Tekla Structures in order to improve clients' designs, maximize efficiency, and develop practical manufacturing solutions.
Which resulted in many benefits in terms of Saves time, Mitigates risks, Improves project performance, Cost effective, Increases transparency, Less variations during construction along with Shared responsibilities.
More than 5,750 metric tons of steel were used for the building, which spans a total of 54,000 square meters, where ASSENT was also responsible for delivering high quality steel structures including design verification, connection, fabrication, and installation, which would not have been possible without the help of Tekla software.
Challenges and Success Factors
Since the project includes many complex operations requiring accuracy and clarity in every aspect of construction and installation on vast hanging areas, closing the envelope proved to be the most challenging, primarily because the construction process had to start from top to bottom!
This challenge was overcome by designing and building custom scaffolding connected to the base wall with PIN connections, which was made possible by the data-rich 3D model that helped us come up with the best practical solutions within the fastest amount of time.
Prevent clashes and unnecessary RFIs
Finding possible mistakes during the construction design phase is way cheaper than finding those on the site. In the same order of ideas, who wants to waste unnecessary time finding missing information, especially if you and your team are already on the site and ready to install!
The as-built model reduced the costly surprises and requests for information (RFIs), as the 3D model created in Tekla gives the LOD’s up to 500 - the highest level of development possible.
Therefore, the Multi-material 3D models were essential to prevent clashes of any size. Trimble's Tekla Structures have enabled us to anticipate obstacles before they even happen, through simplifying digitization in any clash detection, accelerating project operations and team productivity through every stage of construction, ensuring everyone is on the same page regardless of location.
With the help of Tekla we managed to get the valuable construction information that we could share, modify, and combine so that our work on this project was more efficient, productive, and collaborative, as per our high standards.
Efficient Collaborative Modeling
The project required a lot of information from many stakeholders involved , which is made easier with Tekla Structures' ability to integrate with other software solutions, digital construction tools, and fabrication machinery resulting in smoother workflows.
We have also productively used Tekla Model Sharing to share models and coordinate between our offices in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. it has enhanced team performance despite limited internet access with its unique features of continued productivity by modeling offline with Tekla Structures, Flexible workforce resource management in BIM projects, Always up-to-date model, Ensured performance when teams collaborating online, Secure online platform with protected access and transfer to customer data and Stakeholders kept up to date.
As a result, implementing advanced technology in efficient construction modeling, along with the effective planning and skilled resources will always result in outstanding results for the business and the world by delivering more sustainable projects to the world with more confidence.
