Elevate: Welcome to San Antonio. Come and See What's Happening

Join us as we launch Elevate: The Tekla North America User Meeting 2014. Hear about what has been happening since our last meeting and what exciting topics and opportunities we have planned for the next few days and beyond.

Vision 2021: Preparing for the future needs of the architecture, engineering, construction, owners and operators (AECOO) industry

The National BIM Standard-United States (NBIMS-US), in its very early stages and as a comprehensive standard it has a very long way to go. Typically, standards and codes document the past, but NBIMS-US is somewhat unique in that it is trying to blaze a path for the future.

To do that and be successful, there needs to be a clear understanding of what the future holds. We need a vision and a strategy. We need to understand and document what our industry will look like in 5 or 10 years such that we can build a standard to support that future state.

With this in mind, the Vision Task Force 2021, under buildingSMART Alliance, was created in early 2013 with a 12 month mission to identify trends, develop a vision and uncover the future. Our premise surmised that by choosing a timeframe not too far out, we could quite reasonably predict what our industry will look like; the innovators of today represent the majority of the future.

We approached experts from every corner of the construction and real estate industry and asked them to prepare a short essay about their role and their specific industry in 2021. Those essays were to be delivered in the present tense, looking back over the past 8-10 years and providing commentary on what has changed and how those changes came about.

The results would provide us not only a vision of the future but would also enable to us to understand what needs to happen to make it a reality, what ‘calls to action’ we need to make now to ensure it does happen and what effects and benefits the industry would experience as a result of positive action.

Abraham Lincoln said that the best way to predict the future is to create it. And that is exactly what we aim to do.
This presentation will present the results of this effort, in the present tense, looking back at what happened, how, and why.

Effective Project Communication

Shortly after I attended the Atlanta User Meeting in 2010, I started a new project with a new customer I met at the User Meeting. For me that was very good return for the investment I made to travel there. Some people say they can't afford to go to these meetings – I say they can't afford NOT to go.
