Alta Bates Summit Medical Center: BIM and Integrated Project Delivery
From logistics planning for a congested urban site to constructability analysis of a complex rebar design, the $289 million, 13-story ABSMC patient care pavilion in Oakland, CA., is anything but routine for the project team.

Much of the ABSMC foundation design was based on decades old as‐built drawings from the existing buildings. During demolition and excavation, the team discovered many unforeseen conditions and inaccurate dimensions. Using BIM, robotic total stations and laser scanning technology. The project was modeled in Tekla to begin construction and to support multiple site coordination tasks including shoring layout, clearances to overhanging buildings, MEP/FP systems and optimizing foundation pour breaks. Since the ABSMC site has a zero lot line and connections to the surrounding buildings on three sides and at seven different levels, the project team used Trimble Robotic Total Stations and laser scanning equipment, integrated with Tekla’s Construction BIM solutions to coordinate easily and effectively.
Contractors for the ABMSC project began drilling piles in January 2011 with a 31-day schedule delay due to permitting, weather and unforeseen site conditions during demolition. With extensive collaboration and the ability to react to field conditions using BIM, the project team made up all 31 days of delay before the start of steel in October 2011.
