Engaging the student body and raising school spirit are key elements to the architectural vision behind the new 1,800-seat stadium and canopy. The lightweight “floating” canopy cantilevers over 54 feet, providing unobstructed views for the grandstand spectators below. The modern reflection to the architectural rhythm of the existing building is accentuated by the careful set-out and shaping of prefabricated steel girders. Careful structural detailing was developed to ensure the roof seamlessly coordinates with the supporting services required.

Challenges and achievements

During the fabrication of these box girders, we faced several challenges, particularly in maintaining their straightness. The extensive welding involved in constructing a box girder caused significant warping in the steel. This posed a risk of the beams and columns having a noticeable sweep, which would have been problematic on-site as it would affect the proper fit of wood and concrete components. To address this issue, we employed special welding procedures to minimize distortion and ensure the girders remained as straight as possible. These meticulous efforts resulted in the steel fitting perfectly on-site.

The installation of these steel girders demanded exceptional precision, given the tight working quarters of the job site. On one side, there was an NCAA track and field area, while on the other side, there was an existing complex. At one stage of the installation, the steel girders, weighing 29,000 pounds each, were within 12 inches of the existing structure. Any contact with the steel beam would have caused significant damage and hindered the progress of the project. Our erection crew had a well-thought-out plan to ensure a smooth installation. Our partners on this project, were instrumental in installing the five girders in approximately half the scheduled time. This achievement stands as a testament to the entire team's efforts, as the concrete, embeds, steel and CLT (Cross-Laminated Timber) panels all aligned perfectly.

Using Tekla software

This project has truly been a collaborative effort, involving multiple parties working in synergy. The construction management team, the architects, the engineers, and the installers. Lastly, the steel & wood fabricators worked closely with all parties to ensure the project's success. We are thrilled to witness the transformation from conceptual ideas on paper to fully realized structures. Looking ahead, we eagerly anticipate the return of live sports events, as it will allow us all to gather and enjoy the new outdoor stadium at SFU.
