The Castle Creek Campus project is a multi-building expansion of an existing musical education facilty in the mountains of Aspen, Colorado. The project consists of nine new buildings with varying uses; from classrooms, music instrument practice rooms, gallery space, and a library. The structural components vary from one building to the next. Some are structural steel framed, or structural steel and concrete, and others are structural steel framing mated with heavy wood framing (GLB). Many of the buildings have raw log columns combined with the exposed steel framing, paying homage to the mature trees of Aspen.
The complex structural framing, and hybrid structural systems presented a detailing challenge that could not have been achieved in a 2D environment. Because much of the interior structural framing is exposed, the design team took advantage of this opportunity and presented the custom structural components as something to be admired instead of hidden from view.
The use of Tekla software was instrumental in the success of detailing the steel structure and coordinating with a variety of other trades and subcontractors. All buildings have been delivered to the Owner per the fast-track schedule, which allowed for construction to commence and complete in approximately one year.
