Welcome to the North America Tekla BIM Awards 2017

The Tekla BIM Awards showcase and reward the hardwork and innovation that goes into using software to solve engineering challenges, working collaboratively and delivering better outcomes for all involved.  The awards focus on projects of all shapes and sizes which have used Tekla software as part of the process for designing and 3D modeling a structure or where the use of Tekla software and BIM has aided collaboration and the digital construction process.

Participating in the Tekla BIM Awards is a great way to gain publicity for your company - the competition gains more media exposure and becomes more popular each year.  Winning an award will help raise your company profile and help attract new business by increasing credibility.

So if you have used Tekla software on a project, however large or small, that you think illustrates the benefits of collaborative workflows and model passed processes, or a project you are proud to have worked on, then choose the best category to enter.

Entering the Tekla North America BIM Awards can open up clear business benefits for your organization.

The Tekla BIM Awards are an international competition so success in the North America awards could also lead to success in the Global Tekla BIM Awards.

Employee motivation and reward

  • Entering the Tekla North America BIM Awards recognizes the hard work and achievements of your employees.
  • Both entry and winning can help boost staff morale and improve motivation.

Student showcase

The competition offers a venue for students to showcase their skills amongst the most iconic projects in the industry.

The Tekla North America BIM Awards have six categories. One prize is awarded to each category. Projects will be judged on their individual merit and we are looking for examples of collaborative workflows and model based processes to support your entry. You can submit one entry per category.  Voting is open to the public and can be promoted by the competing company. Only one vote per project per person will be counted.  After public voting has closed, the top 3 within each category will advance to the final round.  The winners of the Tekla North America BIM Awards will be decided by our judging panel.

Voting will be based on:

Collaboration

  • How collaboration and co-ordination were used and demonstrated on the project
  • Multiple phases of the model life cycle (Design, Build, Operate)
  • The number of participants using Tekla or other reference models
  • Use of open BIM and the benefits of the reference model from an open BIM perspective

Innovative use of Tekla software

  • The basics covered – drawings, BoM, etc.
  • What challenges were faced and how they were overcome
  • New ways of working

Constructability

  • Level of detail
  • Multimaterial modeling and useage
  • Complexity – of the geometry of the structure and the combined complexity and level of detail of the modeling

“Cool” factor

  • Impressive or quirky structures

How to enter

First, decide which category you would like to enter. You can enter one project per category.  This year we have six categories to choose from:  Steel, Engineering, Cast-In-Place, Precast, Small, and Student.

Second, complete an entry form for each submission. Click on the "Send your project" button displayed on this page. The entry tool requires a program to be installed. Once installed, the program can be run from the program folder Trimble Solutions Corporation > Tekla Awards Installer2016. Each submission should include the following:

  • A description of the project in at least 500 words - this is your opportunity to use words to 'sell' your work. Consider including:

     - information about the project and other companies you collaborated with.
     - the benefits of using Tekla software such as reduced costs, time saving, interoperability, planning and scheduling.
     - other software used (sketch-up, VICO, laser scanning, etc) and interoperability.

  • Tekla Structures model (.db1) and the environment in which it was created.
  • If you have done any system modifications please submit also:

     - profile database (profdb.bin)
     - material database (matdb.bin)
     - bolt database (screwdb.db)
     - bolt assembly database (assdb.db)
     - rebar database (rebar_database.inp)
     - parametric profiles (profitab.inp)

  • Full Trimble Connect/Tekla BIMsight model (.tbp) including bolts, reinforcement and reference files (if relevant).
  • Snapshots of the model (min. 3 image files) featuring the whole model and relevant details.
  • We also recommend you to highlight the best parts of your project by saving them as snapshots in the Tekla BIMsight project.
  • Sample drawings of the project (2-3 pdf files).
  • Photographs (min. 1 image file) or artist’s impression of the project.
  • Your company logo, if your project is a joint entry please provide company logo(s) of those particpating.
  • If you used BIM processes and this is relevant to your entry, then please provide the reference files.
  • Virtual Tour  - click here to access the virtual tour extension should you wish to create navigations in your model.

     - Set the default settings to a 3 second delay, 3 second transition and create no more than 15 snapshots
     - Save the Virtual Tour file as a .vtr file extension and upload it into the entry form

If you have a specific vision of how you would like your project to appear and/or have customized settings that you want included in your project’s video, we recommend that you utilize a screen capturing software (ie. Camatasia, etc.) to record the virtual tour file of your project.  If you are sending just your virtual tour file (.vtr), please be sure to include any custom object representation attribute files from your project.

Please include all the requested information as it strengthens your entry and allows projects to be judged using the same level of detail.  The more information you provide, the better your chances of winning!
