Winchester Uni, West Down Campus

The model consists of three main areas, Blocks A, B and C - a lecture theatre, library and support frame for the core 10 façade. Hillcrest are delighted to offer the structural steel frame for the new west downs campus at Winchester University into the 2021 Tekla Awards.

What were the challenges and what made the project successful?

Due to the complex arrangement of the structure, accurately setting out the steelwork was more challenging than usual. Various views, construction objects and work planes were used to ensure the frame was arranged as intended.

Curved members encompass the entirety of the lecture theatre, introducing another level of care required when setting out to the radial dimensions specified to ourselves. Careful consideration was also necessary when designing the connections to these sections due to the curved surfaces.
