Taylor Woodrow have been appointed by Abellio Greater Anglia to carry out design and refurbishment of the existing railway depot to facilitate servicing and maintenance of new fleet arriving in June 2018.
The depot occupies a site situated adjacent the River Wensum and bordered by two live Network Rail Main Lines and a grassed area known as the ‘Wensum Triangle’ to the North-West of the existing site. The depot is located approximately 1 mile south east of Norwich. The refurbishment work is expected to last around one year. Access Design & Engineering (ADE) have been sub-contracted by Taylor Woodrow to design, manufacture and install the steelwork access gantries and steel / GRP handrail and flooring to the gantries along with other general access metalwork.
What were the challenges and what made the project successful.
One of the greatest challenges on the project was the volume of different disciplines working to meet their requirements in very confined spaces, all within the confines of an existing rail depot. This was overcome by a very successful BIM co-ordination process between all parties, with weekly design / model reviews to overcome clashes.
What benefits utilizing BIM and Tekla Software brought to the project.
Tedds was used in the preparation of the end connection design for this project. ADE are a BIM level 2 certified supplier through Lloyds Register. The implementation of BIM in the past couple of years has greatly improved the co-ordination capabilities of the business, to a point where we are also providing a large degree of support to our client for their BIM needs. The co-ordination of disciplines on this project was invaluable, due to the very confined space between train carriage kinematic envelopes. Without a BIM collaboration between all disciplines / sub-contractors the site costs would have been a great deal higher due to retrofit solutions to clashes.
The project in numbers
ADE's scope for this project was 200Te of steelwork along with 600m2 of steel open grid flooring, 750m2 of GRP open grid flooring & 100 linear meters of removable GRP handrail. Other products such as stairs and ladders were also supplied. Project value to ADE was around £2.5m
