New radar tower in Northfleet, Kent, that oversees safe navigation on one of the busiest reaches of the River Thames. The state-of-the-art structure has replaced an original, aged tower with a new, energy efficient system including: radar, CCTV, weather monitoring, pilotage sector lights and a microwave communications system. Due for operation early 2019.
As the radar tower was the first of its kind for our specialist design team, we worked closely with our client, to ensure our expertise fulfilled their exacting plans. Through collaborative processes and information sharing, we produced 3D models to develop connection details for the 50m high radar tower.
The tower’s access items, however, benefited from our wealth of experience in the area and as such were designed at our discretion to our client’s requirements. We completed the tower’s design by detailing fabrication packages for its ladders, miscellaneous stairs, flooring, handrails and a central spiral staircase together with its base mesh enclosure.
What were the challenges and what made the project successful.
By using the power of Tekla and its 3D modelling we could model the tower complete with its access stair and ladders ensuring there was sufficient headroom / access at the numerous laddings.
What benefits utilizing BIM and Tekla Software brought to the project.
Using model snapshots, IFC's and Tekla bimsight we could clearly show our client the many obstacles we had to overcome as we modelled the structure.
The project in numbers.
