Amazon Van Park, Hull

This project is a multi-story car park for a new Amazon Warehouse being built. The car park will house workers vehicles, as well as delivery vehicles for the adjacent warehouse.

This project is special as it's set to create many jobs for people local to the area, especially during the ongoing pandemic, its a beacon of hope for people who have been left without work.

To MSW, it is one of the first car parks we have detailed as a business, using Tekla to draw our decking layouts and provide a 3D IFC model to our client. 3D decking modelling for us is still in the early stages, but we are very proud of what we have been able to achieve with Tekla on this project and sets the path to producing bigger, more detailed models in the future.

What were the challenges and what made the project successful?

The challenges of this project were mainly to do with size and details, this project requires over 9000 decking sheets fixed to a steel frame with pre-welded shear studs, so deck sheet length is imperative, as well as smaller details around stair cores and ramps. Tekla made this project successful as running through comments with the client via a VC, sharing our screen to go over any tricky areas was really an eye opener and made the process much quicker, which in construction is crucial when sticking to programmes.

What are you most proud of about the project?

MSW are most proud of the milestone of being able to produce high quality 3D decking models for our clients, it allows us to produce models to wow our clients and even down to being able to visualise decking materials on our clients steel frame, weeks before materials are due to site is a big advantage over traditional drawings, Tekla also allows us to provide GA drawings that are easily updated, revised and professional that coincide with the deck model.

Tekla software and BIM allows us as a business to offer a better service, a more detailed look into the materials and the process of installation, it helps us save time when drawing decking to the steel frame and helps make clients/ design teams comments more streamlined, as everything can be seen from any angle thanks to the 3D models we can output.

The project in numbers

Decking for the Car Park = 23,000m2
Decking sheets across all levels including ramps and stair cores = Over 9000
Fixings to pin deck to the steel frame = Approx. 54,000
Linear meters of metal edge shuttering = Almost 1500
