London Bridge Station - platforms

Entered by Waldeck Associates Ltd

A station for the future

London Bridge Station is being transformed into a vision of the future, creating new platforms for more trains, building a new concourse and creating a bigger, better station. London Bridge is the fourth busiest station in the country, bringing around 50 million passengers into the city each year. The changes being made will introduce hundreds of Thameslink trains every day - one every three minutes - offering better connections than ever before and helping London run better. The project is being funded by the Thameslink programme – a £6bn Government investment in rail.

BIM - track progress and keep on schedule

Using Tekla Structures and achieving BIM Level 2, Waldeck are producing engineering drawings and schedules for over 4,000 precast concrete elements of platform structure. All models are created in 3D and automatically transferred into 2D deliverables for our client. The redevelopment works is being carried out by Costain and Hyder / WSP on behalf of Network Rail, with the precast platforms being supplied by Charcon Specialist Products.

To date Waldeck have provided information for the prototype area and the detailed Stage 1 construction and manufacturing drawings of the project which is being used to enable assessment of the constructability, maintenance and co-ordination of drainage and electrical services to the platforms. Using Tekla Structures software we are collaborating to BIM Level 2. The software is being used to share models in multiple formats with the main contractor and client. The software is also used to track progress and provide high level unit details to ensure manufacturing is kept on schedule.

Improved modelling output

The co-ordination of models has been particularly challenging as we have needed to use global co-ordinates for sharing models to and from the main contractor and designers. We have been using Bentley AecoSIM in collaboration of the DGN and IFC files. We have produced specific components and unit profiles for the various unit types in Tekla, which has greatly improved our modelling output, also included within this is various seam joints and cutting components to be able to develope the unit shapes required. We have also been able to split our model into phases to demonstrate model changes, unit amendments, individual platforms and construction phases for the client and main contractors.

Collaboration with Tekla BIMsight

The ability to co-ordinate the model between various software's and file formats has provided all design parties the ability to effectively collaborate both models and drawings, throughout the development and detailed design process. The speed in which drawings are able to be created has been a huge advantage to Waldeck in providing Charcon with manufacturing drawings and bar bending and mesh schedules. It has also enabled Charcon to use Tekla BIMsight to view models during manufacturing to reduce the amount of factory queries.
