Well, here we have something: A Tekla-led research project has created a new concept of managing building information models. SH Structures created giant horse sculptures (see right) and Arup works on Project OVE, 170-meter virtual replication of human body. Also, BIM now fits into your pocket with Tekla Field3D.

If football is on your list of interests, Arena Amazônia in Manaus, Brazil, will probably look familiar. The Amazonian rainforest and the straw baskets of indigenous peoples inspired the German Gerkan, Marg und Partner (GMP) to create the architecture that Martifer Construções successfully built.
Martifer created a steel structure that circles the stadium creating a 23,000 square meter roof and is coated with translucent white PTFE membrane sheets, reducing the temperature in the stadium. With clever use of Tekla’s BIM software, they improved productivity by 20% and efficiency by 30% while successfully meeting the tight construction deadlines of the stadium.
The project offered Martifer challenges. They modeled the Arena Amazônia in 3D and extracted 2D drawings plus CNC and material listings, and created specific files to control geometric coordinates of the beams during manufacturing, pre-assembly and final assembly. Fabricating the twisted and cambered beam required exact coordinate control. To manage pre-assembly and assembly, track materials during manufacturing and also for logistics, Martifer combined the possibilities of their own and Tekla software.
Arena Amazônia is just one of the 10 football stadiums in Brazil where Tekla was used for building information modeling (BIM).

The recent DRUM research project has challenged the predominant idea of managing building information through one centralized, heavy model. The main result of the research is an open concept based on linking, managing and sharing building information over the Internet. According to the new concept, the building information model consists of smaller sectional models that are linked with each other and can be worked on or updated separately over the Internet. This results to fewer conflicts between different project parties’ models and facilitates information use.
“We expect the results to realize in the construction industry in 2 to 3 years as software houses start applying the concept that has been developed,” says a participant of DRUM, Development Director Ilkka Romo of Skanska.
DRUM was part of the three-year PRE research program and lead by Tekla with Aalto University as the main research partner. The results have been noticed internationally, and currently a network of researchers is forming around the topic.
Tekla Field3D is a high performing mobile BIM tool for handling large data sets and constructable, detailed models. With the new mobile application AEC professionals can conveniently take BIM to the field with their iOS mobile devices. Rig Thai Engineering Co. Ltd has worked on hundreds of buildings projects in Thailand and South-East Asia since 1980, developing a reputation of building complex steel structures on time and within budget.
In 2012, they engaged a technology solutions provider. As the employees started to use the newly installed computers, anti-virus software constantly alerted them of malware on the computer and they were unable to update their software. Although Rig Thai had informed the provider about their requirements on BIM software, they discovered that the copies of Tekla Structures on their systems were not genuine.
The malware embedded into the non-genuine software caused slowdowns and unexpected crashes. Worst of all, Rig Thai did not know whether there was a Trojan or backdoor in the systems, maybe compromising the confidential information stored on their network and spent a lot of time trying to find the reason for the problems. They realized that using non-genuine software led to more problems and significantly impacted productivity, and ultimately the bottom line.

The Kelpies are 30-meter high steel sculptures of horses’ heads guarding the Helix, a new outdoor recreational area in Falkirk, Scotland. The sculptures were created by the Glasgow sculptor Andy Scott, and his plan was turned into giant sculptures by SH Structures who modeled and build the Kelpies. They chose Tekla software for the project.
The two heads (Duke and Baron served as live models) have complex tubular steel internal frames with outer layer of secondary members, satisfying the loads imposed on the massive sculptures. The external finish consists of laser cut stainless steel plates. Thanks to SH Structures’ experience in off-site manufacturing and trial assembly, they successfully turned the building information model into prefabricated steel sections and delivered and erected the sculptures on site. The company also redesigned the internal support structure thus generating significant savings for the client.
SH Structures worked closely with the client, who had a clear vision, and the supportive artist. This was essential to the project’s success and ensured that the aesthetics remained as close as possible to the 1/10th scale models that had been produced as the basis of the scheme.

Now Arup has rethought the structures of human body with virtual replication in project OVE and demonstrated the potential of BIM. The 170-meter tall research laboratory has respiratory system, heart and brain, it sweats and gets hungry. Trimble acquired CSC last year and now CSC is merging with Tekla. CSC produces software for structural design calculations, FE analysis, and steel and concrete building design. Both Tekla and CSC share experience in the global building and construction market, and customers will now benefit from a fuller and more rounded portfolio of products and services.
