Trimble’s Annual Precast Study Trip 2018 to Ireland

This year’s Annual Precast Study Trip saw Ireland’s turn to play host to almost 25 precast construction professionals from Asia, the Middle East and Russia. In its 5th year running, this year’s excursion provided participants a chance to study the Ireland’s leading precast companies.

The three-day trip, held from 10 to 13 September, is part of Trimble’s yearly initiative to expose customers to leading European precast companies and their best practices, from BIM-based processes, productivity gains through precast product standardization, and automated production. Participants are also introduced to a variety or precast products, as well as the technical details used in Europe.

Touching down in Dublin Airport, participants had the rest of the day to rest-up before embarking on a full schedule of factory visits over the course of the next three days. Amongst the precast companies that played host were O’Reilly Concrete, one of the largest precast manufacturers in Ireland and the UK; Oran Pre-Cast, a leading manufacturer of precast structural concrete products; Techrete, a market leader in designing, manufacturing and supplying architectural precast cladding; and Shay Murtagh, a leading manufacturer specialising in pre-stressed and precast concrete products, including bespoke products, bridge beams, concrete storage tanks, culverts, and tunnel segments.

Throughout these visits, participants were given presentations about the design and detailing processes using BIM, as well as collaboration software tools between project parties. The interesting part was the factory tours, where participants got to see for themselves the backend operations, processes, different products and semi/fully-automated production lines. Aside from gaining insight into how these leading precast companies operate, participants also had the opportunity to have discussions with some of Ireland’s top precast producers and design managers.

As a whole, participants found the trip to be well worth their time. One participant, Mr. Bahaa Ibrahim from Hard Precast Building Systems Dubai, said “It was an exciting study trip, and I particularly enjoyed networking with other users to exchange knowledge and best practices.” With the exposure to some of Ireland’s leading precast concrete producers, many felt the first-hand knowledge and experiences gained to be invaluable, and would highly recommend future study trips to others.
