Shanghai Tongking (SHTK)
Shanghai Tongking Science and Technology Development Company Ltd. is one of the first privately-owned building and construction companies in China. Founded in 1993 with just 3 people and 3 Tekla Structures software licenses, the company now owns dozens of licenses and provides work for more than 100 employees. The company’s growth continues with Tekla Structures being used in impressive, highly complex and detailed projects, such as the Beijing CCTV Tower, Foshan Stadium, and Shanghai World Financial Center.
Impressive growth through impressive projects
SHTK specializes in the “deep design” of steel structures. Since the very beginning, the company has carried out a large number of significant detailing projects both in China and abroad, ranging from airport navigation centers, sports stadiums to long-span conference and exhibition buildings, and from large-scale theaters to steel production shops.
SHTK was founded in 1993, mainly to focus on structural design and consultation using very few staff. Since 1996, the company has been focusing on steel detailing and has completed many impressive domestic and international projects, such as the Nanjing and Chongqing Olympic Stadiums and an F1 international Autodrome. At the same time, the company has grown to about 100 employees and become one of the leading private structural design and detailing companies for steel in China.Through experience from a series of engineering projects based on computerized 3D modeling, they have established a unique design system, which combines structural design and calculation to construction detailing, to form an efficient and accurate work procedure. Strict about quality
The company founder Mr Zhu Fuhua graduated from Tongji University in 1982 and started his private company in 1992. The secret of his success is his long-term focus on studying steel structures, specializing especially in steel connections, while also becoming familiar with fabrication, welding and erection.
Tongqing is now able to control the whole steel construction process from structural design, detailing and fabrication to erection. That is the main reason why owners, design offices and contractors are so willing to cooperate with the company. In addition, under the leadership of Mr Zhu, the company is very strict about quality. The whole staff aims to achieve the same goal: zero errors, which is another important reason why customers appreciate the company.
Shanghai Tongqing has invested a lot in the development of technology and in staff training. The company invests a big proportion of its revenues every year on updating equipment, purchasing and updating software, training its staff, and hiring skilled technicians. The company is famous for its professionalism, precision and hard work.
Investment in software pays
It is one of SHTK’s characteristics to use 3D digital modeling technology. “We have gotten rid of creating 2D plans and elevation and cut-view drawings altogether, and model all building members in 3D with Tekla Structures software,” says Zhu. “This leads to zero errors on the drawings.” After comparing several software, they have found Tekla to be the most advanced, powerful and promising solution available.
During the past eight years, the company has purchased dozens of licenses for Tekla Structures, which has become a reliable support for the company’s development. According to Mr Zhu, steel structures all over the world are developing towards having a longer span, more height, a more complicated shape, and more abnormal curved plans. The steel used for a single project has reached 50,000 tons or more – 140,000 tons for the Chinese CCTV building – a traditional way of detailing cannot ensure the tight schedules or quality any more.
Only by using a powerful 3D software like Tekla Structures, can detailers focus their effort on the connection design. They do not need to bother with tedious dimensioning or calculating material any more. Zhu concludes by saying: “It is no exaggeration to say that only Tekla Structures software and integrated NC equipment allows steel structures to be standardized, modularized and assembled to accelerate the speed of erection at the construction site.”
More and lighter steel structures for China
What is the company’s vision for the future? What kind of growth can they expect after the success they have already accomplished and how are they going to utilize Tekla Structures to gain the most benefit from the application in the Chinese market?
“Our direction is to develop the systematical design of steel structures and to provide our customers with the best construction and detail drawings,” says Zhu Fuhua. “With safety as the number one aim, we want to cut down the weight of steel to try to make the cost of steel structures closer to concrete buildings with similar conditions. My opinion is that this will encourage more and more steel structures to be used in China. During the process, I am positive that we will cooperate very closely with Tekla.”
