Interoperability extends life cycle support for civil engineering processes

Tekla’s interoperable software solutions support processes throughout the life cycle of civil engineering projects. The practical solutions support preliminary planning, final engineering, road and infrastructure construction, management of feedback from customers and other stakeholders, and quality assurance.

A successful construction project needs a reliable, model-based design. On-site data management and the use of building information models are in a key role in successful projects involving machine control. Modular Tekla Solutions for civil engineering support model-based operations and provide infrastructure designers and constructors with support for faster and more reliable design and construction processes for roads, streets, railroads and other earthworks.

Technology enables more powerful processes

Tekla Solutions for civil engineering are based on Tekla Civil software that meets the needs of modern infrastructure design and construction. “The software describes designed projects as continuous digital models, storing data as logical objects to support civil engineering processes,” describes Erkki Mäkinen, the Segment Director of Civil Engineering in Tekla. “Our software interoperability and the wider network Trimble has opened to us have contributed to the development of our model-based way of working to cover the whole life cycle of civil engineering processes. We constantly develop our technological core concepts, which helps our customers improve their processes and strengthen their core competencies,” says Mäkinen.

Practical solutions support every project phase

Tekla offers practical solutions that cover every step of a civil engineering process. The concept is based on three principles: integration of hardware and software, e.g. total stations and machine control devices, integration of different hardware, and finally the utilization of effective interfaces and data transfer networks between the infrastructure designers, on-site offices and field. “Tekla Civil makes collaboration between infrastructure designers and constructors easier and joint projects more efficient. The software also enables comparison between as-designed and as-built, and thus supports quality assurance,” Mäkinen says.

As Tekla Civil supports detailed design and construction tasks, preliminary planning phases of civil engineering projects are supported by Trimble Quantm, alignment planning software. Integrations between infrastructure and engineering structures, such as bridges, noise barriers and station platforms, are made possible by interoperability between Tekla Civil, Tekla BIMSight and Tekla Structures, a building information modeling software. The feedback from stakeholders can be managed with Tekla Feedback software.

Tekla customers benefit from the life cycle support for civil engineering processes. “The total processes are faster and more reliable. This increases the competitiveness and core competencies of our customers”, Mäkinen concludes.
