The new landmark of Vallila

The new headquaders of OP is being build in the Vallila area in Helsinki. The design assignement includes both new buildings and renovated parts. The area of the new parts including new class-roofing is approximately 58 000 m2 and renovated parts about 30 000 m2. The new parts consist of four underground parking floors and seven floor aboveground.

Underground floors are cast in place structures, and the cast in place slab structures are post-tensioned structures. Structures that are above the ground the frame is made of steel composite columns, steel trusses and beams and hollow core slabs. The geometry of the frame is varying and the loadbearing structures have parts that are leaning to different directions. The geometry was challenging from the structural engineering point of view, skewness of the structures caused horizontal forces, which made design of the parts and details more challenging. The chess pattern in the facades made it very challenging to fit geometries together and design detailing connection between elements. Extensive glass-roofing had extraordinary load bearing steel frame is complex and executed with long spans.

The whole new complex is founded on solid rock. The foundation level is about 12 meters below the ground water, which is also the reason why the excavation pit is injected and reinforced to be waterproof. Waterproof pile planking were used during the construction work to keep the consturction pit dry. The building is stiffened by stair and elevator shafts. Prefabricated concrete elements are used in the facades. Elements have different surface treatments, changing from natural stone, plastering and floor high glazing. Between the new complex and the renovated and there are courtyard that are covered with class-roofing. The whole new complex is founded on solid rock. The whole building frame is done using building Tekla Structures, including the reinforcement in the cast in place foundation, bomb shelters and stiffening shafts. The design work of the frame that consist from different materials is done simultaneously in different offices. Otherwise reinforcement of the CIP structures has been done using traditional methods. The quantity take offs of reinforcements and embeds are produced based on the model and delivered to the construction site and for subcontractors. Raudoitteiden ja valutarvikkeiden luettelot on tuotettu mallista ja toimitettu työmaalle ja aliurakoitsijoiden käyttöön. All the concrete precast structures have been modeled and detailed. Void and hole reservation process has been managed using model based workflow by modeling the holes into the structures based on the IFC voids that were provided by MEP designer. The total number of the hole reservations has been altogether approx. 7000 pieces. The dimensioning of the wholes are created by the structural engineer in a semi-automated manner. The status information of the design process has been regularly updated into the model. The geometry of the old structures that are to be renovated are modeled into the same model and this model has been exploited in the design process.

Wide-ranging utilization of the building information models was carried out successfully, and dimensional accuracy of the structures and fitting them together regardless of the complex geometry was successful. During the project, both architectural and MEP-models were put into use. The actual layout points were imported from the construction site and used during the design process. For example the realized 3D geometry of the trickiest mining locations helped designing some corrections and fittings in the structures. Status information has been used for tracking the degree of readiness. The construction site has used the model in planning and organizing the construction works and furthermore for communicating between different project stakeholders. Structural model has been used to provide IFC models for architect and MEP engineers for fitting the designs together and model checking session 1-2 times a month organized by management contracting contractor.
