Revitalising an iconic London landmark

Battersea Power Station, a Grade II* listed building, is a central London regeneration project aiming to create a vibrant destination. The vision included residential units, commercial spaces, entertainment venues, and retail outlets. Retaining the building's original fabric, including steel frames and brickwork facades, was a crucial aspect. William Hare played a key role in supplying and erecting close to 24,000 tonnes of steel for this iconic project.

Challenges and achievements

Innovative connection details were required to maintain the intended structure while accommodating loadings. The construction of the distinctive "tree column" posed significant challenges in design, fabrication, delivery, and erection. The project's success can be attributed to the exceptional teamwork, out-of-the-box thinking, and expedient program management, resulting in efficient project delivery.

Using Tekla software

  • Weekly 3D model reviews facilitated accurate spatial coordination.
  • File exchanges and point cloud surveys enhanced coordination between all parties.
  • The use of BIM allowed for comprehensive fabrication strategies and streamlined communication among stakeholders.
