Tekla Structures API – Beginner’s Guide

In this topic we are going to discuss on how Tekla Structures add dialogs for profile, rebar, material and many other controls to its User Interface dialog (UI).

First we need to add the user interface controls to your Visual Studio’s Toolbox and it’s as simple as drag and drop as shown in the snap below.

In this example I have used Visual Studio Professional 2013 but you can use Visual Studio Express Edition for free.  Go to Microsoft website for details and download for this platform.

You can also go to the toolbox and right click to select “Choose items”.  Then browse for Tekla.Structures.Dialog.dll and click add the file.  You can find this DLL under the root directory of Tekla Structures root directory folder.

Once you have added the user interface controls in the toolbox, you can now drag and drop the UI controls to your form.

If you are interested to learn Tekla API or attend trainings you can send your inquiries to support.me@tekla.com or call our office at +971 4 391 5640 and we’ll be happy to assist you in your inquiries.

And as always happy coding.

Feature Extensions

Some new extensions have been publish in Tekla Extranet page.

Export to Autodesk Revit [for ARCH/MEP drawings]

Simplified IFC export to Revit with software specific settings.
This export can be used with the BIM Publisher to set up (scheduled) exports of multiple models at once. Export to Revit previously belonged to the Export to Software package.

PDMS and Tekla Structures Interoperability

Tekla Structures export to PDMS is an application which produces an .ifcZIP file. File contains IFC and needed other files. PDMS application will read files and create PDMS objects. Installation file creates Tekla Structures application and PDMS package zip file includes needed files for PDMS. Note: This is still in beta phase and under development. Feedback to address: Tekla_PDMS_Feedback@tekla.com

The Tekla Structures/ETABS plugin allows the user to easily transfer the structural model data from Tekla Structures & ETABS, and to insert an ETABS model into a blank Tekla Structures model.

DSTV File Name Modifier

This tool is developed to help Tekla Structures customers to customize NC file names. Default NC files are being created with only Piece Mark whereas some customers would like to have Project Number, Profile and Material in NC file names. It is all possible with this new tool.

Tips and Hints

Q: Model Memory is corrupted! Even if the model is being diagnose and repaired in regular basis the issue still persist.

Specification: CPU i7 Intel core processor, 32 GB Ram and Graphic Card Nvidia Geforce GTX 670

A: This usually happen when handling large models in multi user setting, inconsistency occurs in the model which cause errors popping out when saving or exiting the model.  The only way to resolve this is to do a model dump.

Model dump is very easy and simple to do.

First To export a model into a model dump file, click File > Export > Model Dump. Tekla Structures creates the model.dmp file in the model folder.

Second Create a new model and copy the model.dmp file to the model folder.  Click Import > Model Dump. Save and Reopen again the model.

Q: Which Autocad versions are supported in Tekla Structures for importing DWG ?

A: Tekla Structures versions 19.0, 18.1, 18.0 and 17.0 insert AutoCAD dwg reference drawings up to and including the 2010/2011/2012 formats as all the same. The Import > DWG/DXF function also imports dwg  drawings up to and including the 2010/2011/2012 formats.

Tekla Structures versions 16.1 and 16.0 insert AutoCAD dwg  reference drawings up to and including the 2010/2011/2012 formats. However, the Import > DWG/DXF function only imports dwg reference drawing up to and including the 2007/2008/2009 formats.

To clarify what the two different dwg functions are used for, the import reference object import all the surfaces included within the reference file for clash detection etc. Using the Import > DXF/DWG, just brings in the construction lines that can be used to create a model either by selecting the intersection points or by converting the lines to profiles.
