It’s that time again! The whole world is cheering for their favorite football team as the 2018 World Cup kicks off in Russia.

World championships need world-class construction, and Tekla Structures has been a game changer when it comes to the creation of many of the world’s top stadiums. Our constructible, highly accurate building information models support the entire workflow from design to manufacturing, and from construction to maintenance.

Tekla’s BIM technology and tools were used in the construction of 8 of the 12 2018 World Cup stadiums. With structural BIM workflow contractors, design and installation project members delivered high quality work while meeting their deadlines.

  • Spartak Stadium, home to FC Spartak Moscow, has the capacity for 45 000 visitors. Its façade features hundreds of interlinking chainmail-like diamonds, which represent the Spartak logo. The façade can be changed depending on which teams are playing.
  • St. Petersburg Stadium – known as Zenit Arena when not hosting the World Cup -- can seat 68 000 spectators. Its “spaceship design” and 286-meter-wide retractable roof are two of the structure’s most fascinating features.
  • Mordovia Arena in Saransk is able to host 44 000 visitors. The stadium, which features unique geometry and a large number of welded connections, resembles a bright red sun – one of the symbols of the Republic of Mordovia.
  • Volgograd Arena can host 45 000 visitors. The cabled roof and meshed exterior are the standout features of the arena.

    Capability to High LOD 500 matters

    According to Dodge Data and Analytics, choosing the right software tools can reduce a project’s final cost by 5% and reduce completion time, while increasing productivity by 25%. Software with a high LOD (Level of Development) allows the design of elements with the highest level of developments (LOD 500) in the model.

    Mordovia Arena 2018

    Mordovia Arena, built in Saransk for the 2018 World Cup, features unique complex geometry and a large number of welded joints. By using Tekla, local steel fabricator Belenergomash delivered the challenging project quickly and accurately.

    The stadium, designed for 45 000 spectators, will be one of 12 stadiums hosting the 2018 World Cup. Its bowl shape resembles a bright red sun, which is one of the symbols of the Republic of Mordovia. Belenergomash used innovative production, diagnostic and control technologies -- including Tekla Structures -- to help design, fabricate and deliver the stadium’s steel structures.

    “These works were completed on time thanks to the use of BIM and the Tekla Structures software package,” says Dmitry Dolzhenkov, CAD Support Specialist at Belenergomash. “BIM technology helped organize a transparent workflow and ensure productive interaction of all involved specialists.”

    In three stadiums of the Euro 2016, the BIM software Tekla Structures was used in planning and execution of the sports facilities - Le Parc Olympique Lyonnais in Lyon, the stadium Matmut Atlantique in Bordeaux and the Stade Velodrome in Marseille.

    Matmut Atlantique in Bordeaux

    As the largest stadium in the southwest of France and on the Atlantic coast, the stadium Matmut Atlantic Stadium will be a total of five times the venue of the European Championship. Vinci and Fayat are responsible for the construction and operation of the sports facility, which opened in May 2015 and offers 42,000 football fans state-of-the-art standards. The design, which is characterized by a particularly complex assembly could be implemented without any problems thanks to Tekla Structures.

    Stade des Lumières in Lyon

    Opened at the beginning of 2016 the state-of-the-art stadium Olympique Lyonnais provides seats for 59,000 football fans and was the venue for six European Championship games in 2016, including the semi-final. Cabinet Jaillet Rouby modeled the sports facility with Tekla Structures, and steelmaker Martifer also used the BIM software.

    Stade Velodrome in Marseille

    The Stade Velodrome has a 6000-ton cover with a diameter of 250 meters, 65 meters above the turf on a construction of hot-dip galvanized steel. Steel construction company Horta Coslada also relied on BIM Software Tekla Structures for the modernization and expansion of the stadium from 60,000 to 67,395 seats.

    In 2014, the world followed the games in Brazil and Germany won the world the World Cup for the fourth time.

    The construction of the Brazilian stadiums also required high performance.

    With the clever use of Tekla's BIM software contractor Martifer Construções to increased productivity by 20% while building the Amazônia Arena in Manaus, Brazil, and increased its efficiency by 30%. Thanks to BIM, the tight deadlines for the construction of the stadium were successfully met.

    Arena Amazônia offers seats for 44,500 football fans. The Amazon Rainforest, which surrounds Manaus, and straw baskets of indigenous peoples inspired the German Gerkan, Marg und Partner (GMP) to create the architecture that Martifer Construções successfully realized.

    Twisted, challenging structures

    A steel structure circulates the arena creating a 23,000 square meter roof. Using 7,000 tons of steel, the main and secondary structures of angled and H profiles and steel plates rise to the height of 31 meters. The pitch is surrounded by the steel structure coated with translucent white PTFE membrane sheets, reducing the temperature in the stadium which is essential in the tropical climate. At Martifer, 50 employees worked on the design, modeling and construction management, and approximately 520 on the construction site.

    Exciting stadiums for Brazil:

    The Baku Olympic Stadium in Azerbaijan is a prime example of the benefits of BIM and excelled in its design and efficiency at every stage of the project. With 68,000 seats and a retractable roof, the building is designed to UEFA's highest international standards for stadiums. Even more impressive: a global team planned and built the sports venue in just 24 months.

    From the architect in South Korea to the structural engineer in New York, detailing, 3D modeling and BIM coordination in Turkey and Greece, to the team on the construction site in Azerbaijan, a reliable exchange of information between all project participants was essential.

    Precast concrete, reinforced concrete and the main and substructures of the steel structure were all modeled in the BIM software Tekla Structures to provide structural models with a wealth of information. These could be used not only for planning, but also execution on site. Tekla BIMsight also allowed the on-site team to access the information. So everyone involved was always up to date.

    The BB & T Ballpark, home of Charlotte Knights baseball team, is the state-of-the-art stadium for 10,000 fans. In addition to baseball games, the building also serves as a venue for concerts, festivals and public events.

    The contractor Wayne Brothers, Inc. used the Tekla Structures BIM software to design and execute the concrete structure, starting with the foundations, tunnels, retaining walls, and roofing, to exposed concrete in the seating area.

    Wayne Brothers managed layout with points created in Tekla Structures and placing the points with a Trimble Robotic Total station. The management of points in the model has proven to be an extremely effective way to keep up with design changes, as well as the coordination of as-built information.

    Using the dimensioning pegs out of the model proved to be extremely efficient to keep track of design changes and all the detail information of the future building.

    The contractor used the concrete model and Tekla BIMsight to coordinate the pouring of the concrete in planning, monitoring and other trades. The team at the construction site had access to the model via monitors in the construction conference container at all times. Not only has this proven to be an excellent tool to coordinate daily work, but also to communicate with the customer.

    Harris Rebar, the supplier of the reinforcements, was able to use the concrete model to model the entire reinforcement with Tekla Structures. As a result, design and production could be coordinated as if in one piece, something that was previously unimaginable in classic reinforced concrete projects.
