Happy Birthday Tekla Structures!

Tekla Structures 20 has just arrived, and now the software celebrates its 10th birthday.

Do you remember seeing this vintage splash screen before? A lot has changed since the early days. Tekla Structures 12 was the first version to have the familiar blue fading background. Three years later, Tekla Structures 15 used 64 bits, included Construction module and handled rebar. The same version featured Open API™ and worked with IFC files. In the latest years, the drawings and welds have been improved and Tekla User Assistance now offers answers your questions. To find out what is new this year, just scroll down.

Tekla Structures 20 has arrived

The new Tekla Structures 20, published March 12, is designed to make construction workflows more efficient and organized than before. Now the constructable models carry even more detailed information than before, and the software now serves the construction industry better when organizing models, managing tasks and avoiding clashes of the structures.

Smoother workflows

Tekla Structures 20 offers improved workflow tools for managing the vast amounts of information needed for building contemporary, complex structures. Organizer delivers more efficient model information management and increased automation, while Task Manager offers a systematic way to plan detailing, fabrication and erection on site. Clash Check Manager allows communicating, assigning, coordinating and avoiding structural conflicts before they appear on site.

Intuitive creation of concrete floor layouts

Tekla Structures 20 allows modeling and modifying concrete floor layouts, including hollow-core, TT and filigree slabs.

New Floor Layout Tool of Tekla Structures 20 brings efficiency to completely new level with Direct Modification functionalities that ease modeling process and substantially reduce the steps needed for creating concrete floor layouts. New, user friendly tool enables easy modification and flexible change management during the design and detailing process.

Modeling and modifying different concrete slabs, including  hollow-core, TT, and filigree slabs, is efficient and has a flexibility level like never before regardless of size and complexity. With the new Direct Modification functionalities, editing, creating cut-outs, optimizing slab layout and accommodating changes during the design process is easy and efficient. This is user friendly: Editing and optimizing slab layout functions just by dragging and dropping floor layouts handle points, offset lines or individual parts. Adding cuts around vertical structures like elevator shafts is equally easy. 

For working with the composite structures like filigree floors, different layer types with different sets of characteristics can be layered on top of each other and the same functionality can be used to create floor structures with additional layers. In addition, there are several new functionalities for creating rules and conditions to make your floor layout designing process smoother, more efficient and error free than ever.

New floor tool is available as an extension for Tekla Structures 20. You can find it at the Tekla Extranet. 

Welded as modeled

Tekla Structures 20 features all new solid welds which include automatic weld preparations that match the size and shape of the weld.

Welds are an essential in any steel structure, and now they are a fully functional part of Tekla Structures too.  You can now create highly constructable models with true, as-build welds.
Visualization and coordination of welds in the model have been improved, and weld quantity takeoffs allow precise estimation. When you create solid welds with Automatic Weld Preparation functionality, you can easily see and confirm that everything works functionally. The new functionality enables model-based communication and review of weld design, and users can utilize welds for all purposes during a project from estimation, engineering and production planning to quality assurance.

Tekla European BIM Forum 2014: standards, strategies and processes

Learn, unlearn and relearn current concepts, ideas and strategies around BIM: In a nutshell, that is what the Tekla European BIM Forum offered this to 200 construction industry decision makers from 32 countries in February in Berlin. The seminar proved both to the audience and speakers that collaboration is the key for improving the industry’s efficiency and productivity. The event focused on three themes discussing the standards, strategies and processes needed for successful BIM implementation.

Keynote speaker Paul Morrell, former Chief Constructive Adviser of the UK Government, opened the seminar with a presentation titled “BIM: why, how and what next?”. Speaking from the perspective of communities and the public sector, Morrell reminded the participants that action is no more optional. In a world of explosive population growth and growing carbon dioxide emissions we simply can not afford inefficient construction. Change is inevitable and even though BIM alone may not be able to retrieve us, without it the mission might be impossible.

The Tekla European BIM Forum offered a wide range of other viewpoints and success stories. Industry leaders such as the construction group Skanska, the German contractor Max Bögl, the US-based technical builder DPR Construction and the Dutch construction and engineering company Ballast Nedam presented their strategies for integrating BIM into their projects and workflows.

Approaching BIM from the perspectives of both industry and education, Professor Arto Kiviniemi from the University of Liverpool encouraged universities to re-think current ways of working. As new technologies emerge, automation and use of robotics continuously increase and for the first time a building is being printed in 3D, questions like “how long do we need drawings for construction?” are not far-fetched. It is time to understand that BIM is much more than just visualization. It is the tool that can fundamentally reshape the way we work.

In addition to delivering practical presentations and new industry strategies, the event offered participants valuable networking opportunities. The Tekla European BIM Forum exists to bring together decision makers in the European construction industry in order to gain strategic business contacts and gather new insights and ideas for successful business.

 

The Breeding Ground for Future BIM Experts: Tekla Campus

Finding skilled workers is crucial for success of any business, and in construction industry this need can often fall on experts who know the BIM workflow and can use it for their employer’s benefits.   For the students who graduate for professions in an industry of shifting paradigms, growing competition, and increasingly complex projects that needed to be done by yesterday, knowing the current, most productive methods should be a standard. However, universities differ a lot in their approach to teaching BIM.  

Over the last couple of years Tekla has increased emphasis in education. We have invested in a team that focuses its attention to the education community, help to improve curriculum and partnerships within schools and universities around the world and build awareness within our online learning community, Tekla Campus. 

Tekla Campus is free to join and provides students with a community of resources that will prepare them for the BIM skills required in the working life of today and tomorrow.   In the renewed Tekla Campus online service, students can customize their learning experience, based on their interest of study, by selecting their learning paths and then following the track of lessons. They manage their learning process, practice with the software, test their skills and earn small rewards once completed. 

But how well does a student know what is waiting them in the outside world?  The working life with typical roles, career paths and professions may remain distant when you are still studying, so Tekla Campus also provides introductory material on the industry including interviews of our clients and stories of real world projects.

Tekla BIMsight’s 3 Cs: Workshops in the Netherlands and Belgium

In January Tekla and the reseller Construsoft organized workshops in the Netherlands and Belgium on combining, checking and communicating using Tekla BIMsight, the professional tool for construction collaboration. More than 130 participants, armed with laptops, tablets and even some desktops with 20" monitors, got answers for their questions. This was clearly a motivated group of professionals: They were well prepared, as instructed beforehand, and really concentrated on working on the demo models that the organizers provided.

Combine, check and communicate

In essence, Tekla BIMsight can be reduced to the three Cs of Combine, Checkl and Communicate.
To start with, the entire construction workflow can combine models made by different disciplines into a single project model. Tekla BIMsight can also be used to find and check clashes in the model, not on the site with tangible, costly steel and concrete.   The software not only communicates with Tekla models, but also models of various disciplines, including for example architects, engineers,  and MEP and different file extensions, including ifc, dwg, xml and skp. 

The construction industry should not meet technical hindrances in communication. The wide range of professions of Tekla BIMsight users was seen in the workshop as there were architects, system consultants, designers and builders, approximately half of the participants being Tekla Structures users.  Regardless the trade, after the workshop the participants were able to fully utilize Tekla BIMsight – many surprised by the functionalities they learned.

Wednesday 7th May: Rebar Revolution – 15% Efficiency Gain

Wednesday 4th June: Weitz approach to Virtual Design & Concrete Construction
Adopting Tekla in an initiative to eliminate waste and drive savings, Jared Schleifer, Construction Model Manager of Weitz Company, reports saving 22% in rebar requirements alone.The contractor Weitz Company was to reduce some of the big wastes of material overproduction; non-productive waiting time; defects and rework commonly found in construction. The solution was to change their processes and adopt Tekla as the tool to drive BIM. With reference to two projects, Jared will reveal how they improved predictability on their jobs by introducing Tekla.
