Tekla projects use an enhanced submittal review process

Project teams across the U.S. are enhancing the submittal review process to improve the delivery of their projects. Using Tekla software, designers and builders can more effectively visualize, review and share shop drawing submittals in 3D while still delivering a 2D record set. Learn more about how this innovative process brought benefits to the project team in the below case studies.

Sutter Medical – Eden Hospital
Castro Valley, CA

Sutter Health is building a new, state-of-the-art hospital on the Eden Medical Center campus in Castro Valley. This is the largest investment for a health care facility in central Alameda County, totaling nearly $400 million. The project team consisted of Devenney Group Ltd. (architect), TMAD Taylor & Gaines (structural engineer), DPR Construction (general contractor), Herrick Corporation and Candraft Detailing, Inc. (steel fabricator and detailer).

Working with the steel fabricator and its steel detailer, the project team reviewed the steel submittal packages using a complete 3D in-model review process using Tekla software*. Benefits to the project include production of 2D shop drawings after completed fabrication model review by the design team and a faster construction schedule. The project is to be complete in 2011.

Helios Energy Research Facility
Berkeley, CA

Helios is a 5-story, 112,800 gsf building adjacent to the central campus in downtown Berkeley, CA. The building is purposed to finding solutions to global climate change. It will house the Energy Biosciences Institute (EB) and the UC Berkeley Bioengineering Program. The project team includes Smith Group (architect), Rutherford & Chekene (structural engineer), Rudolph & Sletten (general contractor) and Herrick Corporation as the steel fabricator, all from the northern California region

Working with the steel fabricator and its steel detailer SNC Engineering Inc., the project team reviewed the submittal packages using an integrated 2D-3D in-model review process using Tekla software. Benefits to the project included better visualization in 3D, the ability to meet a compressed construction schedule and the adoption of lean construction principles. The project is to be completed in 2011.

Equinix SV5 Data Center
San Jose, CA

The Equinix SV5 Data center project consists of a 126,569 gsf two-story LEED certified building that stands as the fifth and largest new construction data center in Silicon Valley and compliments the existing data center on the site. The project team included Sheehan Partners Architecture (architect), Paradigm Structural Engineers (structural engineer), Turner Construction (general contractor), with Schuff International being the steel fabricator, all from the northern California region.

The steel fabricator along with BDS, the steel detailer, worked with the structural engineer to review the shop drawing submittals using an integrated 2D-3D review using Tekla software. Benefits to the project included a 25% savings in the project schedule and a better quality review for the review team.

California State Lottery Headquarters
Sacramento, CA

The California State Lottery Headquarters building is a new 6-story, 155,000 sf office building that will house all of the Lottery’s offices and operations. Sustainable aspects of the project include a vegetated roof, solar panels, daylight harvesting, and thermal management of sun/heat using automatic and adjustable window coverings.

The project team includes LPAS (architect), Buehler-Buehler Structural Engineers, Inc. (structural engineer), Otto Construction (general contractor) and Herrick Corporation as the steel fabricator, all from the northern California region.

Working with the steel fabricator and its steel detailer Steel Systems Engineering Inc., the project team reviewed the submittal packages using a complete 3D in-model review process using Tekla software*. Benefits to the project include production of 2D shop drawings after completed fabrication model review by the design team and a faster construction schedule. The project was completed in 2010.
