Entering the Russian market with a fully localized product offering

At the beginning of this year, Tekla started operations in Russia. This huge, multi-cultural country is a challenging market but also the one showing the strongest IT growth at the moment. The upcoming Tekla Structures 14 will include a fully localized Russian environment.

According to market research by Global Insight, Russia has a fast-growing economy with good construction opportunities and an acute demand for more office and retail space as well as for modern infrastructure. Non-residential construction will grow briskly, supported by the modernization and development of the country’s embryonic infrastructure, as well as government plans to expand tourism.

The offering for software tools supporting construction has so far been poor in Russia. With the new Tekla Structures 14, which includes a fully localized Russian environment, Tekla feels confident in entering a new world of opportunities. Starting from 1 January 2008 Tekla cooperates with the Moscow-based reseller OOO VentSoft. This company also represents MagiCAD software that integrates with Tekla Structures.

The first seminar in Russia on Tekla Structures – organized in co-operation by steel CNC machine and system provider Ficep, Tekla and VentSoft – was held on 19 February in Moscow, with approximately 60 participants representing the major steel fabricators in the area.

Collaboration between engineers and building services designers

Tekla actively develops collaboration with other software providers in order to help engineers streamline their workflow with other project participants. One example is the collaboration with MagiCAD, the leading 3D software for building services design.

The features in the new Tekla Structures 14 that benefit engineers and building services collaboration include the following:

  • Managing reference objects (reference model formats: IFC, DGN, DWG, XML, and 3dd)
  • Inquiring reference object IFC information
  • Checking clashes between Tekla Structures and reference objects
  • Adding color and status information to reference objects
  • Creating reports with status and GUID (Global Unique Identification) information

These features provide strong support for coordinating building services (HVAC/MEP) design when using them together with an agreed void provision management process. The collaboration with MagiCAD, the leading 3D software for building services design, is a good example.

Elematic and Peikko with Tekla form a strong threesome for precasting

Successful software integration between Tekla and Elematic has helped save time and money in precast projects for several years. Now, the connection provider Peikko Group is stepping in to form a powerful threesome of partners for precasting.

ElematicFinland-based Elematic is the leading supplier of precast concrete machinery and equipment worldwide and is seen as the only one-stop supplier in the industry with products and services from accessories and machines to an entire product line or a complete plant. Tekla Structures already efficiently integrates with Elematic's ELiPLAN ERP system, and now there is even more advanced integration between the companies' software products on the way. The goal is to create a total hollow-core solution, i.e. to provide tools with which to streamline the whole process of general and structural design, detailing, erection planning, production, material management, storage, transportation and erection. Minimizing the need to manually re-input data during the fabrication process means less man-hours and no human errors.

DeltabeamAnother Finnish company, Peikko Group, supplies precasters with column connections, precast lifting systems and fastening products. The group also produces a type of composite beam, the Deltabeam, used mainly with hollow-core and sold in partnership with precasters. Tekla and Peikko have already established a technical infrastructure as well as carried out joint marketing efforts to support the connection between the companies’ products. Peikko items are already available and used in Tekla Structures software, and since fall 2007, Tekla and Peikko have cooperated, for example, by making co-proposals when presenting software to joint customers.

Super Bowl stadium modeled with Tekla Structures

Super Bowl stadiumTekla Structures was used to model the University of Phoenix Stadium, which hosted the NFL's championship game, the Super Bowl XLII, on February 2nd in Glendale, Arizona, US. Tekla Structures is especially suited for modeling challenging structures, such as multi-purpose stadiums.

Tekla Structures was used to detail the multi-purpose University of Phoenix Stadium, which has a retractable roof and a roll-out natural-grass playing field. The 63,400-seat facility (expandable to 73,000) encompasses 1.7 million square feet. It has been described as unlike any other stadium in North America, a marvel of design, engineering, and technology. It was opened on August 1, 2006, after three years of construction.

The stadium was detailed in Tekla Structures by BDS Steel Detailers on behalf of Schuff Steel Company, who took care of the fabrication and erection. Tekla is proud to have been a part of the award-winning construction project. Tekla Structures' multi-user functionality allowed numerous detailers to work on the project simultaneously using the same structural model. Advanced 3D rendering facilities, visualization and reporting tools enabled effective communication between all the project parties. The stadium submitted by BDS Steel Detailers won the Tekla Model Competition in 2005.

The Super Bowl is the championship game of the NFL (National Football League) of the United States and is one of the most important annual events in the sporting world. The new University of Phoenix Stadium was formally known as the Cardinals Stadium. The primary tenants of this stadium are the Arizona Cardinals of the NFL and the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl.
