Summary of Vattenfall’s press release: Vattenfall receives customer-specific information about outages from smart meters

26 February 2010

Vattenfall has published a press release about integrating remote smart meters and control of the electricity network.

English summary of the release:

Vattenfall has integrated remote smart meters and control of the electricity network in Finland. The company now gets information about outages from automatically read smart meters even on a customer-specific basis if needed. Vattenfall Verkko Oy is among the very first distribution companies in the world to deploy such an extensive application.

At the moment, electricity distribution companies monitor their high and medium voltage networks with automated systems. However, when individual customers are affected by faults in the low voltage network, the network companies have so far not been able to utilize automation and real-time information received from the customers’ meters.

With smart meters, Vattenfall is now able to monitor its entire network area of 60,000 kilometers in Finland. Control room staff can check the electricity distribution status of any individual customer. Information received from the meters can also be used to locate faults in the medium voltage network. This makes fault clearing faster and results in better customer service.

The renewal was carried out in cooperation between Vattenfall Verkko Oy, Tekla Oyj and TeliaSonera Finland Oyj.
