According to the jury, this project involved a high level of collaboration. The BIM was utilized by many disciplines, including the architect, structural engineer, contractor, and even elevator suppliers. Lemcon used the model throughout the project from design to construction; to plan erection, to erect, and even to plan disassembly, which is exceptional.

What was special in this innovative project was that the shape of the building was iterated by a new model-based way of working. The collaboration of many disciplines was needed to make it constructable. The structure contains exceptional details and very complex geometry.

Texas Children's HospitalTexas Children's Hospital

The structure of this quite exceptional building was laser scanned and imported to the 3D model, which was utilized in the construction phase. Reference models were used not only to coordinate with the architect and the contractor, but to automatically represent materials other than precast in the detail drawings. Collaborating parties included those doing architectural, MEP, and structural design as well as detailers.

Crusell bridgeCrusell bridge

Special recognition, modeled by WSP Finland Oy (Finland)

The Crusell bridge was recognized for its extremely accurate modeling, including every nut and bolt and concrete reinforcement. Modeled information was used already in the planning and bidding phases of the project. The model was also utilized in site management and included cast-in-place structures.

About the competition

The Tekla Global BIM Awards competition is a way to express appreciation towards Tekla customers and share their success stories worldwide. Showcasing their models celebrates the versatility of Tekla Structures software and demonstrates how its use affects the landscapes around the world. Tekla Structures has played and will play a great role in building many of the complex and iconic structures seen and admired by all of us every day.  
               
The entries to the Global BIM Awards competition were the winners of regional Tekla model competitions held by Tekla area offices or resellers during 2009. The competition was divided into three categories:

The winners of the Global BIM Awards were decided by a jury that consisted of leading BIM experts inside and outside Tekla. In addition there was a public vote and a draw.

  • Competition started November 30, 2009.
  • Web voting was open until December 16, 2009.
  • Winners were announced after December 20, 2009.
