Now is the time to update to Tekla Structures 16
The annual main version of Tekla Structures is available on the
Tekla Extranet. To make installation easier and faster, we have started to develop a more efficient method of online delivery. The Tekla Structures 16 installation solution has been built according to Microsoft’s requirements for the Windows 7 certification.
So far there are close to 2000 installation downloads from the Tekla Extranet. This means that the new version is already in productive use in hundreds of companies. If you want to stay compatible with these early adopters, update your software now and see what benefits its latest version can bring to your organization and offering.
Tekla area offices and resellers worldwide will be arranging roadshows and seminars on the top new features of Tekla Structures 16. Don’t forget to keep an eye on your local Tekla representative’s event calendar!
Tekla 2009 in a nutshell: a good year in challenging circumstances
“Tekla’s turnover declined somewhat in 2009,” comments CEO Ari Kohonen on the 2009 results. “Even so, we consider the year as a good one, given the challenging circumstances. Tekla’s profitability is at least satisfactory and our financial position excellent. This is a very good basis to continue our long-term approach of customer service. Unlike many competitors, we increased our headcount somewhat in 2009. The investment in product development was as much as almost 30%. We do not consider product development an expense but creating added value to our customers.”
“Despite the building industry's challenging situation, Tekla's position as a supplier of 3D modeling software is strong, and the numbers of users are on the increase,” says Kohonen. “Our longer-term outlook continues to be promising. The benefits of information modeling are seen more clearly in site management in particular. Many of the software purchases are strategic, as customers are preparing for an information-model-based way of working. While license sales have decreased, the proportional and balancing importance of maintenance sales has increased. In addition, the number of training licenses intended for educational institutions has increased noticeably. The most promising among the potential markets for Tekla is South America.”
“Tekla’s ambition towards interoperability allows customers to choose the product that is best suited for a specific task,” says Kohonen. Examples are the cooperation agreements signed during the latter half of the year with MAP Software (in August), Graphisoft (in September) and Nemetschek (in October). Measures against software piracy continued both in Tekla’s own efforts and in cooperation with BSA. In July, Tekla opened an office in Bangkok, Thailand, for customer support functions. A corresponding office was opened in Jakarta, Indonesia, in February. In April, Tekla purchased the business operations of 3-Design LLC, a small producer of general engineering software, the primary customer base of which consists mainly of engineering offices operating in the UK market.
Tekla and Rautaruukki signed a cooperation agreement in April 2009. Tekla Structures will be used for structural steel design in almost all countries in which Rautaruukki's construction division has a presence. Tekla and Dutch machine tool manufacturer HGG signed an agreement on continued cooperation during the first months of the year. The aim is to develop a standardized software solution for the steel tube industry in Tekla Structures. Steel tubes are widely used e.g. in the offshore industry. At the end of the year, the Tekla Structures product development concentrated on developing workflow by improving cast-in-place concrete design and IFC data exchange.

Start sending those error reports
Along with Tekla becoming a Microsoft Certified Partner, Tekla Structures versions 16.0 and newer will be included in Microsoft's Windows Error Reporting (WER) system.

This means that by reporting application errors you may experience when using Tekla Structures, you can greatly speed up their fixing process for the next service release at Tekla product development. Based on the reports already received for the Tekla Structures 16 Release Candidate, we were able to improve the final version much more efficiently than what was possible before joining the system.

Most of all WER will help us differentiate random ‘crashes’ from the ones that are more common and need to be reacted upon more urgently. After reporting you will receive a notification on your Windows task bar about a service release being available in which the problem has been fixed.
Even though this is an important step towards automating software error reporting, it will still be worth while to contact your local Tekla technical support for a workaround until the official fix has been published.

Spaencom automates precast production with an elite solution

Spaencom is Denmark’s leading supplier of precast concrete products with more than 50 years’ experience in the field. The company has realized the advantages of automation and is Scandinavia’s forerunner in using the Elite solution, i.e. integrating Tekla Structures and Elematic ELiPLAN software for automatic transfer of all structural data from 4D models to an ERP system. Modern tools make Spaencom a company of the future: young precast professionals are easily persuaded to work in an automated environment, and architects can design without having to compromise on account of structural complexity.

F1 venue to final straight by modeling
The Formula 1 season is starting again. Last year the organizers of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix won their race against time not least thanks to efficient building information modeling by Tekla user engineering office ICW. The Formula 1 event in the UAE turned out one of the most spectacular sporting occasions of 2009, and the Yas Marina circuit is so impressive that it has been voted as the F1 Track of the Year. Is there anything you can’t model with Tekla?
Had-Fab Ltd, UK, are currently using Tekla Structures to model the new statue designed by sculptor Antony Gormley. His sculptures, often based on casts of his own body, adorn public spaces and galleries across the country, from well-known works like 'Angel of the North' to his newest creation 'Exposure'.
Exposure, a 25.6 m high statue depicting a crouching man, is due on site in the summer of 2010 in Lelystad, the Netherlands. The countdown to erection has begun:

Careers in the steel industry
Even in poorer times it can be hard for companies to find personnel with the right technical skills. To add that kind of value to our clients, Tekla is one of the sponsors at steelconnexions.com, a specialist job site dedicated to the field of structural steelwork engineering. There is a special offer for Tekla clients posting on the site - inquire when registering!
Established and owned by recruitment and industry specialists, the steelconnexions website provides an international meeting place and communication portal for professional candidates and employers alike. Dedicated to the steelwork market, this site allows suitable candidates to stand out and employers to quickly search and find the right person for the job. The site also offers a unique environment for fabricators, detailers and suppliers to advertise their services to the international market.
Linea Fabrications Ltd is a Tekla user in Glasgow, Scotland. According to the director of the company, it can be difficult to attract skilled technical people to work in that part of the UK. For a small fee he placed an ad on the steelconnexions site and posted a job for estimating, and within a few weeks employed an applicant. Some time later he successfully uploaded a detailer's position. "The website allowed us to widen the search, giving clear and obvious benefits over traditional recruiting methods. Our involvement has been a success, and we have achieved our recent recruitment goal while also continuing to increase the company's exposure within the job market and beyond," said
Luciano De Marco, Director of Linea Fabrications Ltd.
Battle against software piracy continues
As a member of the Business Software Alliance (BSA) since 2007, Tekla takes part in their anti-piracy program in EMEA, Asia-Pacific and Latin America. Campaigns, raids, and lawsuits help defend against illegal use of Tekla software in these areas. The BSA membership provides Tekla an international network to better protect its customers' investment by ensuring fair competition. At the same time, Tekla has a chance to stress the importance of using legal versions of its products. The results of the cooperation have encouraged Tekla to raise the fight against software piracy into an important strategic element in its operations. Anyone can now confidentially report illegal use of Tekla software on the Tekla Website.
