Why is a Tekla BIM so small in file size?
The file size of a Tekla model always stays small because of built-in intelligence in the software. It has been developed for many years to be very efficient for the detailers who need all the structural information in one model. The database is Tekla's own so it is totally in our control unlike the bought databases of other providers. To be able to support all the needed functionality at the required performance level also with large projects, Tekla has designed a unique software architecture that combines available technologies with custom-built ones. The underlying foundation is Microsoft’s industry standard .NET technology and its development tools.
What's the benefit of small file size?
The model will open faster when its file size is small and you can add more data, such as reference files, models and drawings. It is also easier to collaborate with other project participants by sharing a model file that is more compact in size. In the future, BIMs will get more and more complicated and contain even more detailed information. If your models stay manageable and small in size today, you can constantly add more information into the model without losing the ability to work and communicate efficiently.
How fast is modeling with Tekla Structures?
Even for a very large project, creating and opening a BIM in Tekla Structures only takes a few minutes or less. This, of course, depends on your project and way of working, but for a medium-sized project (for example, a 5-story office building), the Tekla model only takes about three minutes to open. It only takes a couple of minutes to create an accurate BIM of a 3-story garage and get out the bill of material for it.
Can I take just the database (db1) file and recreate the whole model?
Yes.
Can the database (db1) file be opened in any other tool than Tekla Structures?
No.
Can the Tekla model database be zipped up?
Yes, but you don't need to do that because it is already very compressed so it will not get any smaller!
How do I cooperate with other project participants using the Tekla BIM?
A Tekla model is the most interoperable BIM on the
market. Tekla Structures is an open solution that supports
interoperability and standardization and links with various systems
through Tekla Open API™ application programming interface that is
implemented using Microsoft® .NET technology. Examples of standard
formats supported by Tekla Structures are IFC, CIS/2, SDNF and DSTV.
Examples of proprietary formats supported by Tekla Structures are DWG,
DXF and DGN. You can present and share your Tekla BIM using our
FREE Tekla Structures Model Reviewer application.
